Big Hero 6

Disney meets Marvel superheroes in this colourful family film. Loosely based upon the Marvel comic series of the same name, Big Hero 6 follows the story of Hiro Hamada. After his brother Tadashi dies in a fire, Hiro is left with Baymax, a robotic nurse who Tadashi invented. When a masked villain threatens the city of San Fransokyo, Hiro and his friends must work together to become heroes and save the day.
True to form, Disney have created yet another great film that all generations will enjoy. The visual effects are astoundingly good and the action is fast-paced. All the while being lightheartedly humorous and delivering that trademark spoonful of sentimentality. It's Disney's tried and tested formula and we all know that it works. Big Hero 6 is no exception.

The one thing that makes this film really stand apart from other Disney works is the Marvel superheroes element. Whilst it may be (extremely) loosely based upon a Marvel comics series, this film definitely possesses a Marvelesque feel to it. At times it feels as though you're watching an animated Marvel feature. There is plenty of action throughout and even a bit of intrigue brought in by the mysterious, masked villain. All of this ties in perfectly with the warmth and snuggliness that lies at the heart of every Disney classic. Unfortunately, all of this goes hand in hand with the predictability that most family films possess. However, this doesn't detract from the other better qualities of the film. One of which is the character design. Baymax, simple as his design may be, is so cuddly that he is bound to become an instant favourite with children (and toy stores) worldwide. When it comes to Big Hero 6's character design, simplicity seems to be it's strength. The villain, for instance, is also quite simple in design, and yet seems to appear quite menacing despite this.

Shown with Big Hero 6 is the short film entitled Feast. This Disney short is extremely sweet, depicting the relationship with a man and his dog at different stages in his life. The animation is simple compared to that of the main feature, yet is still quite endearing. In just a few minutes, it manages to encompass the many stages in a man's life. From bachelor to husband and father. Arguably, it is worthwhile going to see Big Hero 6 both for the film itself and also to see Feast.

Big Hero 6 is both an action packed superhero adventure and a heartwarming Disney classic. An instant family favourite that all generations will love.
